Opt-in vs Opt-out – What are your thoughts?

Currently, there is a large debate about whether an opt-in or an opt-out system is a better way to encourage more people to become organ donors at the DMVs. An opt-in system, also known as explicit consent, for organ donation means that people are required to actively sign up on the form to register themselves as organ donors. This is the current system in California. An opt-out system, also known as presumed consent, means that everyone is automatically registered to be an organ donor unless they explicitly state otherwise on the form. Our thoughts about the debate are summarized in “Our Perspective” and “The Debate” pages. Which option do you think is better to have at the DMV in order to increase registered organ donor rates? In my opinion, this idea of using an opt-out system instead of an opt-in system would greatly increase the number of registered organ donors.

For example, in the recent Napa fires, all citizens nearby were given the option to be notified if there was a safety emergency (such as a fire). However, the format for this safety notification was opt-in and therefore only few people were notified in time and could have a fair warning. If the city of Napa had used an opt-out system, they could have saved the lives of many more people. For this reason, I strongly believe that an opt-out system is more effective than an opt-in system.

Thank you for this information about the Napa fires that showcases the importance of switching to an opt-out system at the DMVs to increase organ donations.

Opt-out seems evidently better than opt-in due to default neglect. Thank you for informing me about this type of psychological phenomenon.

The opt-out system is unmistakably better than an opt-in system. For example, I was doing some research on this and came across an article stating that Spain currently has the highest organ donation rate in the entire world and does have an opt-out system. This shows me the benefit of the new system.
Rhea, I love your organ donation initiative. If you would like to expand, I would recommend getting the change passed at the DMV.

Thank you for your valuable opinions! I did not know that Spain currently has the highest organ donation rate in the world and has an opt-out system. This is great information that could be very convincing when I propose the opt-out system to the DMVs. Thanks!
