Development of an iPhone App for Organ Donation – What are your thoughts?

Hi, everyone! This is Rhea and during my summer vacation, I plan on creating an iPhone app for this Gifting Lives initiative.

In the app, I will include an About Us section to inform users about the initiative and what our primary goals are. I also plan on including sections containing information about organ donation and myths about organ donation in order to encourage more users of the app to register to be donors.

In order to increase the usability of the app, I plan on also including a section where people can upload their emergency contact info and a section that uses a person’s location and Google Maps to inform him/her where the nearest organ donation centers/registries are.

Finally, I aim to also include a platform where users can share their own personal stories about their direct or indirect experiences relating to organ donation. This idea was inspired by a story that I read about a man who was in need of a kidney transplant and was ultimately able to find a donor by going to Disney World and wearing a t-shirt that said “In Need of Kidney. O Positive.” (The whole article is included here for your reference: https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/25/health/iyw-kidney-donation-photo-trnd/index.html).

Adding a personal touch to the whole concept of organ donation makes people more likely to participate in and contribute towards the noble cause, and this is exactly why I want to create a way for people in need of organ donation to include a heart-felt and touching message that could potentially inspire other users of the app to reach out and help through my app.

So, this is just a basic outline of what I plan on accomplishing with my app and I hope to have it finished by the end of this summer so that Gifting Lives can have a broader outreach and positively contribute towards organ donation on a much larger scale.

What are your thoughts about the Gifting Lives app that I plan on creating? Is there anything else that you would like to see as part of the app?

Love the idea here. Thank you for sharing the CNN post – such an eye-opening, life-changing experience it was to read the article. You are absolutely right, in that, the differentiator comes when the society as a whole, has been made aware of a problem and there is a sense of emotion involved. This is happening across all industries -medical, tech, etc. , and Crowdfunding, Crowd-testing, etc. seem to be the simple solution towards a big impact.

Very much looking forward to your app and the options it will provide to enhance this awareness around us. Good Luck!

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement! As you have aptly noted, this has been a new trend as people are more convinced by an argument when appeals to their own emotions are involved. This is exactly why I want to include this aspect in my app as well so that more people are convinced to be registered organ/tissue donors.

The app seems like a great idea to promote organ donation. By allowing people to share their personal stories, I feel like the app would be more user-friendly and add a personal touch to the app. Also, by enabling people to share and look at other personal stories, they would be more inclined to participate.
The article about the person with O positive blood was really intriguing and caused me to realize that by just spreading awareness, many lives can be saved.
I am currently signed up to be an organ donor and this helps me understand the importance of organ donation. Thank you for opening my eyes to this new opportunity.
